Sudan Rules - Figure Scale, Casualty removal and Movement.

Figure Scale and casualty removal

One figure represents ten actual men.

As the figure scale is 1:10 this enables us to easily translate losses to actual figures removed from the formations.  A unit that suffers 29 casualties has two figures removed and then rolls a dice to see if the .9 is also removed.

This is done in the following manner.  At the end of firing or melee we would remove two figures as per the above example.  We would then roll a ten sided dice (d10) to see if the .9 of a figure is saved or is also a casualty.  If a ten was rolled, the casualty is saved and only two figures are removed.  A roll of nine or below however would see a third figure removed as well.

Movement notes:

a)                  Imperial Troops moving from a charge may only move at pursuit speed.
b)                  Mahdist Troops falling back from an adverse reaction test move at pursued speed.
c)                  Pack animals move at the speed of the troops they are attached to.
d)                 Wheeled vehicles (guns or wagons) move at Infantry column rate i.e.9 inches.
e)                  Wheeled vehicles moving at pursued speed have a 5% chance that a wheel will come off in the rugged Sudanese terrain.  If this happens it will take up to four turns (d4) to repair.  No movement is allowed until it has been fixed.
f)                   To mount or dismount takes all troops ½ a turn of which only one action is allowed per move.
g)                  Mahdist mounted riflemen can be deployed dismounted at the umpire’s discretion.  If this is done and they are required to react to a charge they then do so as foot.
h)                  It takes ½ a move to change formation from column to line and vice versa.  It takes ½ a move to change from column to square and a full move to form a square from line.  All this is the same in reverse.
i)                    It takes one turn for troops to go into skirmish order from formed and the same to return to formed from skirmish.  Only one company from each battalion may elect to form skirmisher formation and only one troop from each Mounted Regiment.  Skirmishers may move at charge speed (15”) at all times.
j)                    It takes one turn to enter or leave a building regardless of formation.
k)                  All formed troops and all Mahdist mounted move at ½ speed whilst crossing rough ground, obstacles etc.  This does not affect Mahdist foot who move at normal speed across all terrain other than impassable.
l)                    Turning to face reduces movement by 1” infantry and 2” for mounted.  This includes an about face.
m)                It takes a full move for a screw gun to be assembled or dismantled by its crew.  Once assembled it can be moved 6” a turn without affecting its firing ability.
n)                  It takes ½ a move to limber or unlimber field guns.  Field guns may also unlimber ½ a move and fire.
o)                  Field guns may also be manhandled 3” and still fire.
p)                  Machine guns act as field guns for unlimbering but may be manhandled 6” and still fire.
q)                  All movement for foot, mounted and artillery other than in a straight line is by wheeling.  No sliding is allowed.

By our definition, movement from a charge as determined in point a) above represents an action only
when they have beaten the Mahdists and forced a withdrawal.
